Fast 5 Travel Tips: HOT HOT Deals

Black Friday sales are abound. You can cash in on travel deals right now.

Here are the first 5 offerings:

1. Westjet.com - flights & vacations on sale. Hot deals include bargains like this one to San Diego California. Look at those flight times...no overnight stop in Calgary and no driving to Winnipeg on icy roads!

2. Aircanada.com Their sale includes destinations across Canada, to the USA, plus International and Sun destinations too. You can travel until April 30th 2016 if you book during this sale. Yes, Spring Break dates ARE included.  One really great deal I spied was to Fredericton, NB. $418! Unbelievable to fly to the Maritimes on Spring Break at that low of a fare. Definitely worth the drive to Winnipeg to board that flight.

3. Sheraton Hotels are offering 25% off on hotel rooms booked before December 6th. Book now and travel into September, 2016.

4. Redtag.ca is a bonus savings of $15-$100 per person if you book your travel package with them.
There are great deals to Mexico, including 5 star resorts at under $1200 with taxes included.

5. On November 30th there will be a Twitter Travel Auction presented by Air Transat. They are auctioning off vacation packages on twitter. This is the second Cyber Monday auction for them. Funds raised go to charity. Last year's packages were hot sellers, with some going for $1000 less than retail. The trips up for auction will be revealed on November 27th.

Here's a sample of one of the winning bids from last year.

My best advice to you in shopping for travel deals this week is to act quickly. The top bargains will sell out easily. And, if it's in your budget, book your Spring Break flights now. It will be the best opportunity for savings on those popular dates.

Pier 21: My Story

(Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, Halifax, Nova Scotia)

I loved the stories on the wall, the yellow manila tags handwritten in pencil and hung by strangers. It was captivating. The art installation and interactive museum display asked, 'What's your story.' And people answered.

I enjoyed it for a few moments, snapped a couple photos and made my way through the museum for another hour, never believing I had my own story. After all, as much as I knew or believed, I was 'just a Canadian.'

On the main floor of the museum, there is a little library room sponsored by Scotiabank. They invite you to search out your family history. To use their services, at no charge and perhaps, make a meaningful connection.

The museum was virtually empty, a very quiet, rainy November day. So when I walked into the Scotiabank library I was greeted instantly, and warmly. Unsure that I had any business or purpose in that room, I hesitated, but just a little.

The clerk, a bright welcoming woman in her 20s, said to me, "Can I help you look something up? Who would you like to find?"

Of course, wandering into the room, I had no plan. No idea. No one to find. But, when prompted with the question, I replied with my Great Grandfather's name. I mean, I believed he was English, possibly, ok likely, and I think he must have immigrated to Canada at some point. I'm sure I'd heard something from my Grandmother. (I should have listened better when I was young and with her.)

And with that name. 2 words, uttered like a shot in the dark, we were off. Off to the races!

She asked "Do you know what year he immigrated?
Me: Sorry, no.

What country did he come from?
Me: No, sorry.  Probably England, I think.

Do you know the name of his parents?
Me: Amos. Amos was his father.

I thought your Great Grandfather's name was Amos? And his father was Amos also?
Me: (pause) I think so. But I don't really know.

Do you know where they lived in Canada when they arrived?
Me: Yes! Morris, Manitoba.

-------tap tap tap on the keyboard,  tap tap tap ------

"Here we are!"  she exclaims. And on the screen was a census form stating that my Great Grandfather, Amos, was 4 years old at the time he immigrated to Canada with his siblings and mother Eliza.

They came over in 1881 and arrived at the Port of Quebec on the ship named The Sarmatian.

The next two minutes are literally a blur as my eyes welled up with tears. On the screen in front of me, was a black and white photo of the ship, then immigration documents, census documents and even the ship's handwritten passenger manifest.

I could hardly choke out words it hit me so hard. It was like a wall of history and I was gasping for air.

Of all the children, my Great Great Grandfather (Amos) chose to name his third son, Amos.

The second generation Amos goes on to name his own second son (my Grandfather) Leonard Amos. And then I went on to name my second son, Calder James Amos.

Though naming of my son, was not coincidence, it was absolutely deliberate to honour my strong bond with my dear Grandfather who had passed several years ago. But suddenly, I had a stronger bond. A deeper connection more than just two generations.

About all I could share with the clerk, in audible words at this point, was, "I named my son for my Grandfather. His name is Calder James Amos." And then I pointed at the Kleenex box and reached towards it. She knowingly obliged and passed me a Kleenex.

So much for not having a connection to Canadian immigration. The thought of a four year old, on a ship, with his mother and siblings, was overwhelming to me.

"May I borrow your pen?" I asked.

No need she replied, "I've printing everything out for you. Let me just tuck it in an envelope for you."

And all that, happened in LESS THAN 5 MINUTES. On a Friday afternoon in November.

Thank you Canadian Department of Immigration. Thank you Halifax. Thank you 'technology' and all the people who contributed to the recording and preservation of census documents.

And thank you Scotiabank. That was indeed a gift.

Christmas in Cuba (Dec 20-27)

There are very few Christmas bargains that line up with the school break, but I found one for your consideration.

I've used a search criteria of 2 adults and 2 kids. It's 4.5 star, and all inclusive. Flights are direct, and convenient from Winnipeg. December 20th to 27th, 2015.

I haven't been to Cuba, or this resort, but it certainly does read and review well. (If you're considering it, do your research or ask your own travel agent for more info)

$4300 for a family of 4, all inclusive, over Christmas is an excellent deal. I expect this will be snapped up and full in no time.

If you don't have your own travel agent, feel free to call mine.

Maui $483.

I'm just going to tell you that this is the kind of thing that causes the bags under my eyes.

It's 3AM as I write this, and for the past 5 consecutive days, I've worked open to close at the restaurant. I'm tired. And yet, I pick up the scent of a travel deal, and I turn into a tireless bloodhood. I won't stop until I find the big deal.

I won't give you the play-by-play on how I found this, except to say that I shouldn't check my e-mail when I'm in bed. You see, Westjet sent an email with an offer of 20% of econo flights, or 25% off plus.

Ho hum. I didn't think too much of it. I looked around at a couple destinations, and it seemed the prices were inflated so as to accommodate the discount. But, since I was awake, I poked around a little further.

Seems Delta has a nice sale on to Hawaii. (From Winnipeg.) $566 return and taxes in, that's a excellent price any time of the year. (I searched and dates are available through February, but not at Christmas break of course.)

So that's when my 'bloodhound sense' kicks into a higher gear. Hey, I wonder if Westjet has matched those prices yet....

I looked, and yes they have. Nice. Westjet has $566 too. Now I wonder if that discount code works on top of this price match deal....

This is the point I get out of bed and head to an actual keyboard. (tap, tap, tap on the keyboard) Yes, indeed, the promo code works! And voila $483, round trip, taxes included to Maui.  $600 to Aruba is pretty sweet too.  Now accommodations are extra in both these situations, but that's not hard to solve.

Victory! I found the prize. $483 to Hawaii is a GREAT DEAL!  Now I can go to sleep.

But first, take my promo code. I won't use it. (Just incase Westjet didn't send you a code this time.)

Promo Code: REW07   Coupon Code: F8Y7IGP  (Yes, you need both)

They key to getting the best price is do a couple flight searches and find your best price combination, THEN go back and do the search WITH the codes.  If you use the codes right off the top, it will NOT show you the various dates and potential savings of date selection.

Goodnight!  :)

Denver: The Rockies Game

We went to our first Colorado Rockies' MLB game while we were in Denver last week. We've been to a few ballparks before, and always love a good game.

Coors Field, home of the Rockies is located downtown Denver and is an easy walk from most of the hotels.

It's a great stadium, which holds about 50,000 fans and was opened in 1995.

There isn't a bad seat in the house. We opted for Club Seating so that we could get the view we wanted. I positioned us strategically on the first base side, after reading that you get the best view of the mountain sunset from this area. It was indeed beautiful!

We took a good walk around the stadium. There were so many unique concessions to see games to play. It's a fabulous, family evening out.

We got lucky and there were several foul balls hit into the stands nearby. We had our ball gloves with us. (I definitely recommend taking your glove. You might catch a ball, but in the meantime, you can use it to hold your footlong hotdog.)

While I didn't catch a ball, it was really close. A gentleman just two rows back caught one. He was very kind and generous giving that ball to my son. It's a souvenir CJ will treasure!

The home team won this game. There was even a grand slam homerun! An evening to remember for certain.

Get it on the grid

Do you like seeing your options?  Let's check out the possibilities for a reggae Christmas with the help of Trip Central. It's a Canadian site with one of the very best searchable realtime databases, IMHO.

Since we all agree, we like 4 star (or better) vacations, I used that as a criteria.

The first screenshot shows all their holiday package destinations.

Then I chose Jamaica. The only city option with All Inclusive offerings was Montego Bay. This second screenshot gives you a basic overview of what it would cost to go in any month of the year. Keep in mind that it's the same hotel, the same flight, the same everything, just the cost is different based on the time of year. (Supply & demand)

Next choice I made was for December, to plan a reggae Christmas. This screenshot shows the dates available and the lowest cost.

This final screenshot shows you all the different hotel options and their specific prices. My recommendation would be to look at your budget and the price you are comfortable with, then go to Trip Advisor and read recent reviews for that particular hotel. You may read that it is perfect and meets your expectations, or you may read that it's not your kind of place at all.

Vacations are very personal. Each person will have their own set of expectations, interests, and family circumstances. And, at least, I have found that at different times in my life, and depending on who I am travelling with, I want very different things.

My golden rule, is never let price be your ONLY deciding factor.

**Note, I have actually been to Jamaica this year. So if you have detailed questions definitely ask!

Fast 5 Travel Tips: When to travel

I had a friend pose this question earlier today. "When is the best time to travel?"

I'll answer this a few ways:

1. When you need to escape! When you need a new perspective and a breath of fresh air, you should travel.

2. When others aren't! If the questions infers "when are the best deals?" then the answer is definitely in September and early January. When the rest of the world goes back to work, you should travel if at all possible. If you travel immediately FOLLOWING a major holiday, (summer break etc) then you can travel for about 40% less money.

3. When you really need to celebrate! Milestone anniversaries and graduations should be savoured. A trip can help you do that.

4. When something new comes on-line.  A new airline? A new hotel? A new shopping district? They are eager for business and want to please you. You'll get great value if you're an early adopter.

5.When your children are young.  Time is precious and you've heard it a million times, but they grow too fast. Kids are considered Disney adults (price) at 10. And by the time they're 16 and can drive, they won't go anywhere willingly with you. The years that follow are boldly independent and often centred on friends and girlfriends/boyfriends.  By the time your kids want to reconnect and travel with you again, they could be 30 or 40 and it might just be too damn late for you.  So travel while you're both young and able.

--------------

I love this picture. Ok, I was somewhat nervous about handing my iPhone to a camel attendant, but he insisted.  (Ok, I was kinda freaking) But the point of the story is.... my son and I were on a camel!  In my entire childhood and adulthood, no one had ever offered me a camel ride. And here I was, on holidays with my son, in the middle of California and there was an opportunity to ride a tame camel. And it was $5.  FIVE BUCKS?!! I pay more than that for a coffee!  And my son said, "no thanks. We can do it another time."  That's when I went into my "live in the moment" speech and carefully explained that this was likely the one time in our lives when we would be together and actually have the chance to do something as cool and unique as ride a camel. And to shut me up, he agreed to get on a camel. And it was awesome!

My point is this.... if there is an opportunity to travel with your kids, do it. Leap! And with enthusiasm. Travel anywhere and everywhere and leap at the corny opportunities to laugh together and take 1000 photos, because time is precious. And time with your kids is the most precious of all.

So, when is the best time to travel? Now. Do it now! Your trip can be to the next town over, and cost nothing more than a tank of gas, or the trip can take you halfway around the world. Cost is really irrelevant. Your enthusiasm and your time together is THE most important thing.

Helsinki? Adventure Awaits

There is a remarkable flight sale on right now. If you have ever dreamt of visiting Finland, you need to jump on this deal.

From Winnipeg, Manitoba (YWG) to Helsinki, Finland (HEL) for about $600, but as low as $558, depending on dates. There are lots of great dates in November, early December and late January for around $600.  (This is about half price!)  Many airlines participating in this sale, including Delta, KLM, Air Canada, Air France.

Paired with hotel for 5 or 6 nights, it can be had for under $1000. (shown below) Yes, that's return flights, hotel and taxes all included.

In November, the temperature is near 2C. It is the beginning of the winter season, similar in climate to Manitoba, except that it will be more of a damp cold due to it proximity to the Baltic Sea.

Visit your favourite agent to jump on this deal before it disappears.  There's even an opportunity for a stop over in Paris at no extra charge, if you book your flight times right!

Helsinki tourism link will whet your appetite for this adventure.

Finland is also the site of this year's World Juniors Hockey. However, during this event, prices will be much higher.

Cheaper than a stay-cation!

Broke? Tied to work? Even if you can't go anywhere, with a little imagination, you can make your own home feel like a fancy hotel. Delight the kids or dazzle your next house guests.

This can work for your cabin, your first apartment and even your RV.

Here are 5 easy ways to make your imagination, stay-cation a 5 star delight for $25 or less!

1) Afternoon tea like the Fairmont. Use the good china or picnic plates, it won't matter.... just invite your guests to join you at 3pm. Cut your sandwiches into triangles. Have veggies and dip. Put Pot of Gold chocolates or brownies on dessert plates. Place a candle on the table.  And of course, drink tea!  But give it a fancy name. "Would you like some raspberry marigold catillion tea? Why yes!"  If you're serving iced tea, make sure to add fruit as garnish and little drink umbrellas.

2) Play some elevator music. Something instrumental. It makes everything seem fancy!  Or play steel drums or Caribbean tunes if you've got an island theme.

3) Buy some sample sizes in shampoos and lotions.  New toothbrushes too. Set them out for your guests. You could even roll your towels and tie them with ribbons.

4) Post an activity schedule.  4pm badminton on the front lawn. 5pm movie trivia. 6pm cocktails on the deck. 9pm storytime by the fire.

5) Serve room service on a tray. Add a single flower from your garden, in a bud vase to emulate the elegance of a Westin hotel.

Fast 5 Travel Tips: Pack like a mom

I travel light. I've even taken my family to Hawaii for 8 days without ever checking a bag. And you'll never find me on a suitcase shaming site trying to shove an oversized bag into the overhead bin.

While I don't know everything, and I'll never claim to,  I can sure help the travel newbie.

5 things to pack for EVERY trip:

1. Basic family first aid kit. Make sure to bring any medication you need. Make sure everything is in its original packaging and properly labeled.

2. Snacks. Even if you are travelling to an all inclusive resort, I always make sure to pack granola bars, almonds and trail mix for the flight, the airport delays and the 'hunger crankies' that plague kids on the sometimes exhausting travel days.  The M & M's are for me.  I could never pay $3 at the airport kiosk for my fix!  Snacks can take up very little room. This is one Ziploc sandwich bag.

3.  Distractions.  Batteries die and even kids get bored with their video games. So I always pack a deck of cards (think Go Fish or War) and a tactile puzzle. (See the little wire puzzle.) You can pick up one of these mind bender puzzles at any toy store for about $9. They are deceptively simple and sometimes frustrating, both are awesome qualities and challenge you and the kids in ways you will enjoy. Road trips or airport lounges, these wire puzzles get passed around and around. Everyone loves them and asks me where to get them or even if they can buy it from me. Hours of old school fun!

4. Pack something that makes you feel fashionable and fun. It's YOUR vacation too. And don't forget the hat and sunscreen. You need to model good sun habits for your kids.

5. Pack a camera. Any camera! And have it with you at all times. Some of the impromptu experiences and sudden joys will be what makes the trip most memorable.  And please print photos when you get home. At least a few! Because we have all heard the stories of broken phones, lost cameras and stolen memories. Don't lose yours.

I love scenes and signs. Brings back great vacation memories!

So much more that JUST Calgary!

It still makes me cringe when I hear people say,  "I don't want to fly to Calgary. What good is Westjet if there's only one flight a day and it only goes to Calgary?"

OMG NO! Westjet does not ONLY fly to Calgary. Calgary (YYC) is a hub. A hub!! Like Denver is to United Airlines and Minneapolis is to Delta.  Their flight system feeds into their hub and from there you can connect to the world!

From our little airport in Brandon, Manitoba (YBR) you can currently fly (Leaving at 1:15pm) and get to your fabulous holiday destination same day. That list includes Honolulu, Maui, Palm Springs, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Vancouver, Nanimo, Comox, Edmonton, Los Angeles and more!

However, there are additional routes (Like SNA, SFO) that require an overnight stay in Calgary (YYC) but, as on January 15th, 2016 Westjet will double the number of flights out of Brandon, with strategic timing so that you can widen your choice of same-day destinations even more.  This is wonderful news!  It definitely has cost savings for the bargain traveller.  When you eliminate the hotel stay in YYC you are saving at least $150.

Let's look at this Las Vegas example:   Look at the flight options in September and January.  Pretty great eh? More vacation for your money. And realistically, back at home at 11:20pm after arriving at YBR. Sure beats that 2 hour & 20 minute trek from YWG!

The future of travel looks bright and includes our YBR. Where do you want to go next?

Fast 5 Travel Tips: Why you should buy the professional photo

1. Because this is what it looks like when a family member takes a photo of me, in paradise.

2. Because the photo is missing you when you are always behind the camera.

3. Because this is what it looks like when you try to take a selfie. Not a lot of paradise in that photo. But the giant shoulder shot is great. Ugh. And nobody's teen wants to be in a selfie with their mom.

4. Because equipment failure can ruin a once in a lifetime pic.

5. Because it's a small price to pay (usually $10-20) for a print of resort or cruise photo that is ready for you to frame. No on-line ordering, no picking up at the mall AND, perhaps most importantly you are helping contribute to someone's employment and their family all while you & your family get to enjoy a vacation together.

Fast 5 Travel Tips: All time best bargains

My personal list of travel bargain jackpots. All from the last 7 years.

5.  We added 4 nights in Florida to a hockey trip to Minneapolis for $275 per person. So we drove to MSP, watched my son play hockey, left the car at the hotel, then got on a plane to Florida for 4 days/nights at at amazing Hyatt resort.  Flew back to MSP and drove home. Would have been over $1000 per person if we'd flown from home.

4. Kids fly & stay free. A bargain found post-strike with Air Canada back in 2012. We took the kids to the Turks n Caicos Islands. Was under $$900 per person for a family of 4. Amazing value considering the regular price is about $6000 per family of 4 at a modest resort there.

3. Air Canada had Olympic specials in 2010 when Canada hosted the winter Olympics in Vancouver/Whistler. One such special landed me a $99 flight (& taxes)  to the Bahamas. So I went for a 3 day weekend. That was awesome.

2. Found a First Class Delta flight to Maui at Christmas, for $495 tax included, roundtrip. Yes, First Class at Christmas. Amazing! So, even with hotel and food we spent about $3000 for 8 days in Maui over the busiest holiday time of the year for a family of 4.  I think that was 2009.

1. $283 round trip flight from Minot to Nassau, on Delta. In transit, the airline offered us $600 per person (family of 4)  in future travel credits to bump & catch the next flight out. Yes! Hell yes, we took that deal.  So we then had 1 year to use the travel credits. We had 6 free flights to California out of those $2400 in credits in 2013/14.  Unbeatable travel bargain luck!

Fast 5 Travel Tips: Mom, get in that photo!

5 Reasons to let go of your anxiety and jump in that photo.

1. Do it for your kids.  Let them have photos of their mother. They love you whether your hair is 'done' or not.

2. Stop feeling like a caretaker and more like a participant! It's your vacation too. Being included in the photo helps you feel included in the fun. Anything else is alienating.

3. Drop the excuses and be authentic. You wouldn't tell your best friend that she's too fat to get in a photo.... so why would you do this to yourself?

4. You will never be younger than you are today. (Even if you feel tired, ugly or grumpy, you will still never ever be younger!) Just smile!

5. Do it for your kids. Yes, I know this was the #1 reason, but honestly, it bears repeating. If you constantly tell your kids that they should go without you or that you don't NEED to be in the photo, or you don't want to JOIN the family, they might start automatically excluding you, or worse yet, they grow up and model the same behaviour thinking they, themselves, are not WORTHY of inclusion.

Fast 5 Travel Tips: Leave the Stress at Home

5 Tips for enjoying ANY vacation more:

1. Pack your sense of humour and curiosity. A perfect vacation does not exist. Laugh at the hiccups and keep going. Don't let one wrong turn spoil the day.

2. Leave your schedule and work at home.  Work will wait for you....this is your VACATION.  Don't skip the museum or eat in the car just so you 'can stay on schedule.' Relax and stay up a little later. Sleep in. Have brunch at 11am rather than trying to squeeze in breakfast and lunch at your usual time, or between activities.

3.  Wear bright colours and take more pictures. This moment only happens once, but your memories can last through photos.

4. Ask more questions. Ask a clerk where SHE would go for lunch. Ask a fellow traveller if he has discovered any must-do activities in the neighbourhood. Smile, and don't be shy.

5. Buy the local newspaper. Read it over coffee while you relax. You'll be surprised with what you learn, and you may even see a coupon or a local offer that catches your eye.

Discount Disney! This January!

If you've ever wanted to take your little one to Walt Disney World in Florida, but have been intimidated by the price, or the crowds, this is your moment.

Now, this is as budget friendly as Disney gets... their value hotel, All Star Movies. But, a budget Disney hotel, is still a Disney hotel.  You get all the Disney magic you can handle in the parks, exactly the same as anyone else, staying at the Ritz or The Grand Floridian.

Shown here with one adult, and one child under 10.

Shown here with 2 adults.

Shown here in this Westjet package, you get direct flights from Winnipeg to Orlando, plus Disney transfers to the hotel, plus 7 nights accommodation, all taxes included. Plus you get full use of the free Disney shuttle/transportation onsite, between parks and downtown Disney.

Now, if you want to do their package, thinking it's a good deal, you can get 5 days basic park passes, and their free value (think cafeteria) dining for $2380.

Now, if you think you can buy flights alone at the current 20% discount and then add hotel separately it will cost $1055. Getting 7 nights hotel, under $200 anywhere is nearly impossible, never mind the included value of Disney transportation.

That's why this package is such a great deal! If you really need to keep the budget low, then I highly recommend cashing in your Air Miles to purchase your park tickets, and pack your own snacks. I've done it, and would do it again in a heartbeat.

At this time of year, the Disney waterparks are both closed, so don't waste your money on  the deluxe park passes which include the waterparks.

The last 2 times we were at Disney World we stayed at the Port Orleans (moderate) hotels. They were fabulous and I would recommend them. HOWEVER, on these dates, they add over $400 to the bill. For me, they are not worth an additional $400. That amount of money could pay for all our food and souvenirs for the week.

Prices current as of 7:20pm December 30th. Other dates available, at other (higher) prices.

If you have any Disney questions, don't hesitate to ask. We've done 2 cruises (Alaska & Caribbean), Disneyland, and Disney World.  All of it done on a budget, and thoroughly enjoyed!

Fast Five: Things I learnt travelling with a pre-teen

I recently took my son on an adventure across three Canadian provinces in four days. We took a plane, a train and an automobile! We also walked at least 20 kms seeing the city sights.

I didn't yell once.

Things I learnt on this amazing adventure.

1. He does listen in school. There were Canadian facts about war and politics (grade 6 history stuff) that he brought up in conversation when we were in Ottawa. Wow.

2. He's well mannered.  He can charm a front desk clerk and make friends with a concierge. I think he's more of a preferred guest than I am! LOL

3. He understands the value and place of a gratuity. "Mom, do you have a $5? It's ok, I do. I'll get this one." (Tips hotel shuttle driver.)

4. He's not big on taking photos. Making memories... yes. Actually taking the photo? No. Taking a photo of mom out in public? Heck no. Ok, maybe one. But it's going to be quick and blurry and I'm definitely not waiting for you to smile or put your purse down.  I think this is why selfies came to be.

5. Feed him regularly! Again, I fall back on my best travel advice... have a fruit bar or granola bar in your purse. They come in handy on every vacation & keep the good times rolling.

Would I take him on a solo trip again? YES!!! Again and again and again. I had such a great time and had the chance to appreciate what a capable human he is. Made me feel like a capable parent too. I must be doing something right.

Picture of me on vacation. Taken by you-know-who.

And back to the selfies. LOL

Our Amazing Adventure: Part 8 The Food

I have a rule when I travel. No chain restaurants if at all possible. Oh, but I know that's a major challenge when travelling with children.... someone always wants the comfort or familiarity of Subway, and they ARE on every corner in every town. But it IS possible.

I simply feel you have a more "local" and authentic travel experience when you think outside the chain. I was very proud of my son for not even asking for a mc-something at all on this trip.

In Quebec City he chose a place called "Les Trois Garcon" for breakfast. It was great! I loved their decor. We did our best to order in French. I believe, translated directly, my son asked for "an egg of the chicken, a small pig and bread that is blank." Charming, in a grade 6 french class kind of way.

Rue Saint Jean becomes a pedestrian only street each evening.
My favourite memory from the trip was our sunset dinner on Rue Saint Jean at Sapristi. It was simply the moment. My son and I laughed and debriefed the events of the day. We had no time constraints and were just hanging out. Hanging out with fabulous food, on a fabulous summer night, on a patio in a fabulous city! Our server was a warm and gracious host. We ordered dessert just to linger in the moment. Our own little french postcard memory, if you will.

I won't pretend to be a foodie or tell you what to eat. My only advice is to budget 20% more for dining than you normally would. Not because food is more expensive in Quebec, but because you will want the moment to last. You'll splurge on dessert and another drink just so you can stay a while longer.  And you'll be so glad you did!
