Disney Park Passes
Did you know that you can purchase Disney World, and Disneyland park tickets through Airmiles.ca?
You simply go into the Dream Rewards section and choose your desired passes. They will cost you around 3000 Air Miles per pass. The current retail price is over $300 US or about $400 Canadian funds.
There are a few other amusement parks who also offer tickets through Air Miles. Just make sure you give yourself 3-4 weeks to receive the passes in the mail, prior to your trip. Though, the last time I purchased Disney passes this way, they were delivered in 9 days so I had plenty of time.
When the Canadian dollar is weak, and you still want to make your dream trip a reality, I encourage you to think creatively and use rewards credits like this. I would book my flights and hotel and pre-pay in Canadian funds, use Air Miles for the park passes and limit my souvenir purchases. Eat bigger lunches and small dinners and your dream trip can still come together at an affordable price.

Air Miles Discount Flights This Week
Each week there are new flights being sold off at discounts for gold and onyx collectors. This week, you can snag a flight to Phoenix or Palm Springs for about 2600 (gold) or 2100 (onyx) if you pick the right dates. (plus the taxes) Brandon is included in this week's sale.
Do note that prices already drop after September 16th, from high season to low. So there's savings for everyone there.
Also, I find Monday and Tuesdays are the best days to book these free flights. Seems new inventory comes on line each week. And, even if the flight you want isn't there one week, do check back often. I know it is ever changing.

Now, since you're going to need some money for tickets and souvenirs, you might want to save $300 on flights, and instead of paying retail, cash in your Air Miles for the flight. (If you pay retail for the flights it's $420 if you book asap)
Cashing in your Air Miles will be at a very affordable rate of 1600 Air Miles and just $123 in taxes. You can put the savings towards tickets or the hotel.
A quick glance at Stub Hub says you can have game tickets for about $30 each. They won't be great seats, but you're in the building. (Also check Ticketmaster.ca for seats) So 3 games for about $100, plus flight tax, and hotel (split with a buddy) $300. Plus hot dogs ($11 each) and a few beers ($12 each) I'll estimate $650 for your epic weekend per person.
Worthy of the EPIC WEEKEND title, if you're a baseball fan.
Don't wait on any of this. as the pennant race heats up, so will ticket prices, hotels etc.
I've actually done this Blue Jays trip before and watched them play the Boston Red Sox, so if you have any questions, I have the personal experience to answer them. (We stayed at the Doubletree Hotel, a place we picked up off of Hotwire.) We had a great time, of course, there's something special about an MLB game that you just have to experience for yourself.

Spend those Air Miles
The Safeway e-auction is back. To over simplify, it's a few weeks a year that Safeway and Air Miles team up to clear out some inventory. There are 2 ways to participate. 1) Group Buy.... meaning you must be quick on the draw (these sell out in minutes) and you are purchasing a specific item that is available in a mass quantity. 2) The auction items take bids for a set amount of time. (I think it's 24 hours) and you compete to win one item.
You must sign up to participate, and you must have an access code per action. The access codes are little square cards you are given at the Safeway checkout line when you buy participating products (like Campbell's Chunky Soup).
So, there are quite a few steps to this. Is it worth it? Maybe. Depends what you are in the market for. However, you need to do the math before even considering buying the gift cards (see example shown at bottom of page). You see, you can redeem Air Miles at the checkout at Safeway any time at all, at the rate of 95 miles per $10...therefore 950 Air Miles is equal to $100 in Safeway credit. Therefore, I can't see any reason other than over-excitement that someone would bid over 1000 Air Miles for a $100 gift card. What a waste.
They have in the past, and elude to in the fine print, that there will be travel items up for auction. If I remember correctly, there was a trip and a couple gift cards last time around. The Safeway e-auction has been around since 2011 I believe. I will post if something exciting pops up.

Tickets to Countryfest
You don't have to hop on a plane to catch some great entertainment. A short drive away, in Dauphin Manitoba, is an annual country music festival that boasts some of the biggest names in the industry. Tickets are sold, and sold out 6 months in advance. BUT, you can still grab a day pass (or even a VIP meet and greet) by cashing in your Air Miles. A day pass is just 1400 Air Miles!

When you become a 'super-collector' or as Air Miles calls it.... an Onyx collector, you will earn deeper discounts on flights and other awesome rewards.
To become an Onyx collector, you need to collect 6000 Air Miles in a 12 month period. It's easier to do than you think.
Step 1: Get a second copy of your card so that all adults in your household can collect
Step 2: Strategize to get 300 Air Miles per month from groceries
Step 3: Gas at Shell, and beer/wine/etc at the MLCC should account for another 50 per month.
Step 4: Do your on-line shopping through the www.airmilesshops.ca referral link. (They offer huge bonuses at back to school and Christmas time)
Step 5: Choose Rona over Home Depot for your home renovation supplies.
Then, you will be eligible for specials like these:

How to collect a ton of Air Miles
I wrote about how to build a grocery strategy to collect Air Miles, several months ago.
Here's my specific way of approaching Customer Appreciation Day (20 times the Air Miles) at Safeway and Sobeys.
Step 1: Identify your monthly needs. Toilet paper, cereal, soup, etc. (Things that are non-perishable) I also include canned goods and freezer foods. I also have kids who take lunch to school. So I use this math formula.....
2 granola bars per day x 5 days a week, x 2 boys = 20 granola bars per week (80 per month)
2 juice boxes per day x 5 days a week, x 2 boys = 20 juice boxes per week (80 per month)
2 large boxes of cereal per week = 8 boxes of cereal (per month)
3 boxes of pasta per week = 12 boxes of pasta (per month)
2 jars of pasta sauce per week = 8 jars (per month)
1 bag of frozen fruit for smoothies = 4 bags (per month)
1 bag of frozen vegetables = 4 bags (per month)
Friday night frozen pizzas (Dad's night to cook)= 4 (Per month)
2-3 rolls of toilet paper per bathroom per week, x 2 bathrooms = 16-24 rolls per month
Step 2: Identify the cupboard staples you need: Flour, sugar, baking supplies, sauces, pickles, margarine
Step 3: Add your perishables to the list (in 7-10 day quantities - depending on expiry dates)
Milk, bread, fruit, eggs, yogurt, cheese, dinner meat, lunch meat
Step 4: Is there discretionary money left in the budget for luxuries like chips, cookies, etc?
Step 5: Are there any amazing bonus offers on Air Miles worth adding to the list? (i.e., buy 6 get 100 Air Miles)
Step 6: Study the weekly flyer to see what's on sale and within budget.
Step 7: Adjust the list according to flyer & budget. EVERY SINGLE THING I BUY MUST BE A "good price" whether on sale or not. If it is over-priced, or comes on sale regularly but is regular price today, I DO NOT BUY.
*** Don't be alarmed. This will be bigger than your normal average grocery bill. But it will actually save you time and money in the long run. Instead of spending $100 per week (5 Air Miles) you are spending $300 in week #1; $30-$35 on perishables only in weeks 2, 3, & 4. As a result, you are spending the same $400 per month.***
With this formula, you will collect 300 (PLUS bonus miles) in week #1, and 2 or so miles on weeks 2, 3, 4. This is a HUGE difference in Air Miles from the 20 you would collect monthly from doing $100 weekly shops.
With this strategy on 20x Customer Appreciation Day, you could earn enough miles to buy a plane ticket to Toronto every 4 months.

Did you know that you can book a rental car through Air Miles? It's easy and a good value for your points. Simply book it on-line through their "dream rewards - travel section."
We had the services of a Dodge Charger. It was a great car. It had lots of room and was comfortable to drive on the California highways and Palm Springs side streets.

Palm Springs airport and car rental set up has to be the EASIEST I've ever experienced. It was a short walk through the airport terminal to the rental cars. It was quick and easy to return it when we were done.
I will admit to being intimidated to rent a car in California. I was nervous about the highways and the pace of things. Well, Palm Springs has about 4 main roads and the speed limit is 40MPH. Most people are retired and it was a very easy, comfortable place to drive.
We left the city limits to hike, go to the zoo and hit the outlet mall. No problems at all with driving in the area. Easy peasy. And you didn't have the hazards of ice, construction, detours, snow, and potholes. I can, and do, recommend renting a car to explore Palm Springs.

This IS indeed something to get excited about! As of November 3rd, Air Miles opened up their booking deals from now thru to February 11th 2015. It seems to me, by the fine print, that it would INCLUDE holiday flights, should any actually remain. (This is a long shot, BUT if you are an ONYX collector, they do promise more available flights to you, so you might get something.)

Our Amazing Adventure: Part 2 The Surprise
July 14th I booked the flights and the rail passes. A few days later, I booked our hotel stays.
Then I started working on the details. I got fancy envelopes and created challenges. I bought puzzles and thought of road blocks. I watched the season premiere of Amazing Race Canada on-line again just to get everything right.
Then I enlisted the help of a few friends. They were as excited as I was to be planning a surprise of this magnitude.
Sunday evening, less than a week after I started booking and really getting the plan in motion, it was "go time!"
My son and I were together and I suggested a casual stop at Starbucks to grab drinks as we often do. We went into the store and ordered a latte and an iced tea. When they called his name and delivered his beverage, they also presented him with an envelope. It said "Your own Amazing Race Birthday Adventure starts NOW! You have an hour to pack. Plan for 5 days, bring your sneakers and sense of adventure. You're heading east."
The staff at the store cheered! My son grinned ear to ear and my own heart raced. When we got home he was packed in 15 minutes. "Let's GO MOM! Let's do this!"
2 hours later, in the truck heading towards the nearest major airport I gave him his second clue. It said "Set your alarm for 5:45 AM. A plane that's blue, and numbered 3-1-6 will not wait for you!"
A few taps into his iPad and he found our flight number and learned the destination was Ottawa! I smiled and thought to myself.... son, you don't know the half of it!
Then I started working on the details. I got fancy envelopes and created challenges. I bought puzzles and thought of road blocks. I watched the season premiere of Amazing Race Canada on-line again just to get everything right.
Then I enlisted the help of a few friends. They were as excited as I was to be planning a surprise of this magnitude.
Sunday evening, less than a week after I started booking and really getting the plan in motion, it was "go time!"
My son and I were together and I suggested a casual stop at Starbucks to grab drinks as we often do. We went into the store and ordered a latte and an iced tea. When they called his name and delivered his beverage, they also presented him with an envelope. It said "Your own Amazing Race Birthday Adventure starts NOW! You have an hour to pack. Plan for 5 days, bring your sneakers and sense of adventure. You're heading east."
The staff at the store cheered! My son grinned ear to ear and my own heart raced. When we got home he was packed in 15 minutes. "Let's GO MOM! Let's do this!"
A few taps into his iPad and he found our flight number and learned the destination was Ottawa! I smiled and thought to myself.... son, you don't know the half of it!
